Choosing Between the Alpha or Omega Plans

for Americans or Visitors to the USA

We want to help you choose the right long-term plan for your needs, and it’s important that you understand the differences between the Alpha and Omega plans.

Put simply:

• Omega provides excellent cover inside and outside the USA

• Alpha provides excellent cover outside the USA but is very limited in the USA

You may have noticed a price difference between the Alpha and Omega plans, which is due to the high cost of USA medical care. However, as a guideline, if you spend more than 60 days in the USA and/or are American, then the Omega plan is recommended.

Here is a comparison of the two plans in the USA:

Omega Cover in the USA Alpha Cover in the USA
Up to the whole policy year, depends on which option you choose Up to 60 days
Cover as per normal Emergency cover only
$1,000,000 annual policy limit $50,000 policy limit
Conditions can be treated in the USA, whether they started in the USA or before. Conditions that started before your time in the USA will not be covered in the USA.

Example 1:

An American Omega member contracts stomach cancer in the field. She wants to move back to the US to fight the illness closer to her family. Omega provides the US care she needs and facilitates a smooth transition.

Example 1A:

An American Alpha member contracts stomach cancer in the field. She wants to move back to the USA to fight the illness closer to her family. However, Alpha does not provide any cover for treating this condition in the USA.

Switching to Omega at this stage will not allow the condition to be covered in the USA, as it would be considered a pre-existing condition in the USA. This is a very upsetting situation.

Example 2:

An American Omega member contracts heart disease in the field. He wants to go for a 2-month furlough in the USA. Omega provides the US care he needs. He can also travel, knowing that he is covered should something happen with his heart.

Example 2A:

An American Alpha member develops heart disease in the field. He wants to go for a 2-month furlough in the USA. However, should he have any issues related to his heart disease while in the US, this would not be covered by the Alpha plan. This causes a lot of stress.

Switching to Omega at this stage will not allow the condition to be covered in the USA, as it would be considered a pre-existing condition.
